The Lake District – Part II
Brockhole to Langdale, with Grasmere, Rydal Water and Buckstone’s Jum
ROUTE — BROCKHOLE TO langdale
The true test of our home made prototype kit. Waterproof rucksacks with childrens inflatables strapped to them. A kit that inspired the RuckRaft® and looked both spectacular and ridiculous.
All captured by photograher Jason Evans in our zine ‘Amphibian Ambition’ - available now.
Day 1 – Windermere to Langdale YHA
A swim across Windermere at dawn from Brockhole jetty to Wray castle (and a stop for a coffee and bit of cake). Then a swim around to wray campsite and over to Skelwith Bridge. Dip in River Brathay, Elter Water and then a lovely hike over to the spectacular Loughrigg Tarn. After a swim there we headed up to Langdale YHA for food only to return in the dead of night with a full moon to Loughrigg for a magical skinny dip (photos of that to remain private)!
“They swim and they hike and they swim and they hike. An ambitious, amphibious crew experimenting and improvising with a new sport”JASON EVANS
Day 2 - Grasmere to Rydal water with a trip up to Buckstone’s Jum
Down to Grasmere from the YHA Langdale, swimming the length of Grasmere. Then a short walk through to Rydal water, swimming it’s length from the beach. A few of the group left to go home from Ambleside while the rest of us headed up to the spectacular Buckstone’s Jum for a dive and dip. Then back to Langdale YHA over the top of Loughrigg Fell - which by now felt a bit bigger than it looked on the map after a long day of swimming and hiking.
That evening was quiz night at the Britannia Inn at Elter Water where we came a close second to the team of ringers from Langdale YHA!
Day 3 - Over the tops to Stickle Tarn and a climb up Jake’s Rake for those with the energy. Returning to Windermere on the bus from Langdale.
‘Amphibian Ambition’, a photography zine by Jason Evans X ABOVE BELOW is available in the shop now.
